39. Firstborn Son and Firstborn Daughter
God the Father had a Firstborn,
Who would come to save our souls.
And He taught this righteous Child,
With a grace that made Him whole.
We too come from Heavenly Parents,
With their Firstborn as our guide.
And though we cannot recall it,
We once learned at Jesus’ side.
Firstborn Son of Heavenly Father,
Bless the firstborns of this earth.
You have shown the way before them,
You have died to give them birth.
Help them live to honor Father,
As they grow through Thy great care.
May the Spirit's holy fire,
Witness You are always there.
To each mother comes a firstborn,
Who must find a path alone.
To each family comes a leader,
First to seek the road back Home.
These are challenged in their labors,
They are tested by their days.
They may question, they may stumble,
They will struggle for Christ’s Way.
Firstborn son and firstborn daughter,
Seek the Firstborn of the earth.
By His servants, Father bids you,
To recall His Firstborn's birth.
You were made to follow after,
You had guidance for your life.
As you grew as spirit children,
Long before this world of strife.
To some families will come daughters,
And to others will come sons.
And by paths both long and lonely,
Their firstborns may join as one.
We, today, have come to honor,
Those who love the Risen Lord.
By this union, they seek wholeness,
That they earn the Son’s reward.
Firstborn Son of God the Father,
Bless these firstborns on this day.
As they pledge to love each other,
And to live in Father’s way.
Give them hope and warmth and courage,
As they share a life that’s new.
Keep them safe from sin and error,
Until they can live with You.
Seek in prayer Thy Father’s wisdom,
For He works with perfect love
To find joy for every child,
Who was born to Him above.
You were taught to know His goodness
And to seek the Savior’s grace.
If you teach like those who taught you,
You will see your Father’s face.
Firstborn son and firstborn daughter,
Seek the Firstborn of the earth.
Know your Father blessed and taught you,
Long before your mortal birth.
Be examples of His mercy,
Live to share His faith and peace.
And in time you’ll have your firstborn-
Born with love that will not cease.

Context
A family in our ward announced a marriage of their oldest, a daughter, with the first born child, a son, of another ward family. This was not an early marriage, but one achieved only after great travail and seeking. As I enjoyed the outpouring of well wishes and affection for the newlyweds, insights into how hard it might be to be “firstborn” (something I cannot know, I am the last of five) were impressed upon me. Pondering the matter further, I recorded these verses.
