30. A Priesthood Lullaby
One
Our Father must have held him close,
Before his time to leave.
His earthly test would now begin,
With faith, not sight, he’d see.
I was not there, nor could I hear,
The words He might have said,
But these thoughts came into my mind,
As he lay in our earthly bed:
“There is lasting strength in virtue.
There is wisdom in My light.
My angels watch thy path by day,
And guard thee through the night.
There is power in My priesthood
For true servants of their Lord.
Learn courage, son, and do My will,
My saints I shall reward. ”
Two
Our little boy was gravely ill,
The doctors had no hope.
Their words of doom brought deathly chill,
Of God they never spoke.
With prayer and fasting we did seek
A blessing from the Lord.
With holy oil, in the ancient way,
His power we implored:
“There is lasting strength in virtue.
There is wisdom in Thy light.
Thy angels watch our paths by day,
And guard us through the night.
There is power in Thy priesthood,
For true servants of our Lord.
Please spare our son to serve Thee still.
Thy saints Thou shall reward.”
Three
A mission call! Our joy seemed full.
Too soon he’d speed away.
By faith and works, he had so lived
To be worthy of this day.
Before he left, he sought once more,
A blessing at my hand.
And as I spoke, I felt again,
The power that God commands:
“There is lasting strength in virtue.
There is wisdom in God’s light.
His angels watch your path by day,
And guard you through the night.
There is power in the priesthood,
For true servants of the Lord.
Take courage son, and do His will,
His saints He shall reward.”
Four
He found his queen. They would be wed,
In the Temple of the Lord.
They knelt before an alter, pure,
In humble white adorned.
The Spirit filled the room with peace,
And heaven’s unseen light.
The couple made eternal vows,
To raise spirits in the right:
“There is lasting strength in virtue.
There is wisdom in God’s light.
His angels watch our path by day,
And guard us through the night.
There is power in the priesthood,
For true servants of the Lord.
With courage seek to do Thy will,
His saints He shall reward.”
Five
He holds my grandson in his arms,
To bless and name the boy.
With priesthood holders, my son joins,
God’s power to employ.
As our tears flow, as his voice breaks,
The Spirit fills our hearts,
And guided by Our Heavenly Sire,
This counsel he imparts:
“There is lasting strength in virtue.
There is wisdom in God's light.
His angels watch your path by day,
And guard you through the night.
There is power in the priesthood,
For true servants of the Lord.
Learn courage, son, and do His will,
His saints He shall reward.”
