31. The Season of Our Need
The door is open. All may come
And visit any day they choose.
But antiseptic scents the air,
And you may find us as we snooze.
Please wake us. Spend an hour, or more,
There is so little we can do.
This is the season of our need,
And God, through us, your heart will prove*.
It does not seem so long ago,
You shared with us our summer’s sun.
We learned together of Christ’s life,
And came to live, and love, as one.
But as we aged, we saw you less.
Make no mistake. You had to go,
To small ones of your own to bless.
Choice souls God asked your help to grow.
And, yet, we never lost regard
For, “How are things?” “What’s new with you?”
We still seek for the chance to share,
Recalling many precious views,
Kind scenes that flash before our eyes.
Oh, yes, such come and visit still.
And though some memories fade with time,
God’s promised blessings you fulfilled.
We ask you now for warmth and care,
Until we see our Savior’s face.
Our feeble hands can barely grasp,
And yet our Lord they would embrace.
We don’t get many hugs these days,
For wheelchairs seem our constant friends.
But we have found their touch is cold--
Please hold us close until the end.
And while the number of our years
Is not yet known, each day seems long.
Our neighbors merely share our plight,
We rarely feel that we belong.
So come, despite our lack of grace.
When you were young, we did not mind
Your drooling mouth or weepy eyes,
It was enough to call you. . . mine.
Each visit, like a precious jewel,
Is kept within our tired hearts.
And though we may forget once more,
We are renewed until you part.
Make haste, our aging frames can’t last,
And we’ll return unto our Lord.
Who loved so much that He would die
To share eternal life’s reward.
