119. The Music of the Lord
The Trigger:
I remember a Ward which called a newly arrived sister to serve as pianist. But for the fact that she had exceptional talent, and inspiring fervor, this would have appeared a matter of little importance. It was not. She revolutionized the quality of our devotional services with her gifts. I was amazed that, rather than calling a new organist, our new bishop had elected to use the piano. His choice proved to be an inspired one. I came to perceive a range and depth and emotion in this sister's piano playing which I had not felt with even our best previous organists!
Our prelude and post-meeting music was...truly heavenly. Rarely had I heard someone move from piece to piece, so effortlessly, with spontaneous injection of appropriate improvisations. And, more amazingly, this sister was so expert that she actually sang the hymns as she played!
So, recalling that former time, the following verses came to me. I sincerely regret that my feeble rhymes do not do justice to the beauty and spirituality of that memorable pianist.
The Music of the Lord
Doctrine and Covenants 25:12: “Yea, the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me”
How glorious, the world around
We thank and praise with song and word,
The Spirit fills our hearts with love
To hear the music of the Lord.
The hall fills quickly with our friends,
Our love tempts us to chat and greet.
Yet reverence and quiet reign,
Because of music soft and sweet.
With calming chords and muted strings,
Her gift invites us quietly pray.
We bow our heads and fold our arms,
To show our love for God this day.
We thank those graced with special gifts,
As we prepare our minds and souls.
Forsaking worldly cares and deeds,
To ask that Jesus make us whole.
Unseen by man, are Deity’s smiles,
To see Their talent shared with love.
Angelic records mark the grace,
She earns In Heaven’s books above.
