54. We Would Do It All Again
[Dedicated to Richard Alan Maxwell of the California Highway Patrol
And to all peace officers who give their lives for duty.]
Law Enforcement Speaks:
From every town a few were found who were worthy of the call.
They left their families knowing well they might sacrifice their all.
We chose the finest who would serve to protect their fellow man.
And though some fell, they never failed--we would do it all again.
The Peace Officers Speak:
We raised our hands and took an oath to preserve kind freedom’s light.
And as we drove the roads each day, we prayed to guard the right.
We did not know when morning broke if we’d see the stars again,
But though we left loved ones behind, we would do it all again.
The Community Speaks:
Behind the badge, we saw your faith, we knew your valiant hearts,
And with this symbol of our love, our honor we impart.
You may not know how we respect your last courageous stand.
But when each one fell, we cried as well; we would do it all again.
