121. God's Storms
The Trigger:
2 Medicine Woman, the subject of two previous poems, described for me the rather fierce wind chill factor (-35) recorded near her Northern Minnesota home. I replied that I had not felt ice nor snow for probably 15 years. As I pondered this fact, I came to the conclusion that I was manifestly the poorer for my lack of experience. The balmly skies of Central California had, I came to believe, weakened me in ways I could not well articulate. So, I explored the subject, found the following quote, and then recorded the subsequent eight verses.
“There are some things we learn on stormy seas that we never learn on calm smooth waters. We don't look for storms but they will surely find us. The "God of the Storm" has something to teach us, and His love always drives His actions.” Danny Deaubé
121. “God’s Storms”
Those with lives spent in sunshine and comfort,
Only knowing fair winds in their sails,
Are ‘oft challenged, and fail, when life’s journeys,
Bring them peril, and sorrow, and hail.
So beware of the trap of contentment,
And the lure of a course void of strife,
For the tested are strong for their struggles,
And God’s storms bring our best selves to life.

I will say it again, with all soberness and humility. Great storms approach, and while they are needed to establish the conditions under which the Restored Gospel may truly be preached to every nation, tongue, and people, not all of us will survive. My "balmy days" may prove to have a price higher than I imagined.
